If Mobile Phones are Killing Bees, What are They Doing To Us?

We heard from a client recently that thousands of bee colonies are disappearing as bees are also dying in their thousands. The news then started popping up all over the place. Beekeepers in nearly 30 states and several countries in Europe have reported losses of 40 to 90 percent of their bees. It's been put down to the varroa mite, genetically modified crops, or pesticides and other agricultural chemicals producing neurotoxic reactions, causing disorientation in the bees and preventing them from returning home. It is swift in its effect. Over the course of just one week the majority of the bees in an affected colony will flee the hive and disappear, going off to die elsewhere. The few remaining insects are then found to be enormously diseased - they have a “tremendous pathogen load”, the scientists say. The assumption is that the bees’ immune systems are being deregulated and suppressed in some way.

“They are just dirty with parts and pieces of various diseases,” said Jim Tew, a beekeeping expert with the OSU Extension campus in Wooster. “It looks like a general stress collapse.” Similar disappearances have occurred over time. Tew said he remembers a similar phenomenon in the 1960s. Then, it was called “disappearing disease.” But this one is causing hives to collapse at a much quicker rate and is more widespread.

And a recent study from Germany’s Landau University may well explain why. They have discovered that mobile phones may be interfering with bees’ navigation abilities. In the study, mobile phones placed near hives caused returning bees to avoid their hives and not come home. Further studies are needed to determine if widespread mobile phone use has the same effect as individual phones used in the vicinity of bee colonies.

If the threat to the bees from mobile phones DOES turns out to be real, and my guess is, it will, (though Vodafone, Orange and the rest might work out a way to save the bees. After all, if the human race is destroyed, who will buy the iPhone?), the bees may be just the canary in the mine for us.
